Its brightest star, Altair, has fainter stars on both sides, which is the quickest way to identify it: three stars in a short line with the middle one bright. Altair is one of the fastest spinning stars anyone has measured, turning once in about nine hours and visibly flattened by it. The figure has been an eagle for as long as there are records, in Babylonian lists as well as Greek ones.
