Only two of its stars can be seen without a telescope, and only Cor Caroli is bright enough to pick out. Hevelius named it in the 1680s to fill a blank patch of sky under the handle of the Big Dipper, which is how most of the small modern constellations came about: somebody found a gap between the old figures and put a name on it. What makes this one worth finding is the Whirlpool Galaxy, the first galaxy anyone saw a spiral in, drawn by Lord Rosse in 1845.
