It lies below Lepus and Canis Major. A Dutch mapmaker, Petrus Plancius, assembled it in 1592 out of stars that no existing constellation had claimed, in the space next to the great ship Argo, and the pairing was his point: this is the dove that Noah released from the ark to look for land. One of its fainter stars, Mu Columbae, is what astronomers call a runaway. It was flung out of the star-forming region around Orion roughly two and a half million years ago and is still travelling, along with two other stars that were thrown out of the same place at the same time and are now heading in three different directions.
