Medieval Arabic astronomers called it al-Fakka الفكة, "the broken dish", because the circle is open rather than closed. It also holds a star called T Coronae Borealis, which spends decades too faint to see and then suddenly flares up to naked-eye brightness for a few nights. It has done this roughly every eighty years, most recently in 1946, and astronomers have been expecting the next one for the past few years.
