The easiest way to find it is to take the curve of the Big Dipper handle and carry it on past the end: it lands on Arcturus. The stars belong to Bootes, Greek Βοώτης, "the ox-driver", drawn as a herdsman walking behind the oxen, which are the stars of the Dipper read as a plough rather than a bear. Once somebody has pointed out the kite, it becomes rather hard to see the herdsman again.
