A meteor shower happens when the Earth crosses the trail of grit a comet has left strung out along its orbit, and the grains burn up in our atmosphere as they hit it. The trail we cross in August was left by the comet Swift-Tuttle. From a dark site you can expect around a hundred meteors an hour at the peak, and there is no need to face the point they seem to come from, because they appear all over the sky.
