Spica is Latin for "the ear of wheat", and the figure has been referencing the harvest for a long time: the Babylonians called the same stars the Furrow. The bowl of the shape holds the Virgo cluster, over a thousand galaxies around 55 million light years away, none of them visible without a telescope.
